Minion Madness: Marketing Masterminds

I’m sure you know to whom we’re referring, the Minions. How appropriate that they would go on to steal the show with a movie of their own, releasing in theaters tomorrow. We wonder, how have the Minions gained so much popularity? Although they speak their own language, which is a mix of Spanish, English, French, and Italian, with elements of Russian and Korean, everyone understands the universal language of their mischievous humor. Originally, we knew very little about the lovable little yellow guys as they range in number from 900-10,000 plus depending on the movie. Now, The Minion movie highlights three main minions, Kevin, Stuart and Bob.

In promotion of the movie, Illumination Entertainment has partnered and creatively licensed with several well-known brands to gain the Minions exposure and increase Minion madness worldwide. The marketing masterminds are on a global yellow takeover through a Pantone® Minion yellow paint, yellow Amazon.com themed shipping boxes, yellow Minion Tic-Tacs and their arrival at McDonald’s. Minions have additionally reached diverse audiences across multiple channels including NBA, MLB, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, Italia’s Got Talent, the Super Bowl, Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and more. Digitally they have reached more than 1.5 billion impressions online with the movie trailers totaling more than 200 million views globally. They even have two smartphone game apps. There’s no denying that the Minions have taken over, but like some of our products illustrate, ‘it could be worse.’ And if that’s not enough, the little guys will appear again in the third Despicable Me movie, which will release on June 30, 2017.
